Hunting in the Rocky Mountains and Beyond
I am a new hunter who got the bug when I moved to the Denver area surrounded by thousands of acres of public land and the biggest elk herd in the country. That being said, I also realized that Colorado has upland opportunities out East that are not as talked about. So I am trying it all, from mule deer to turkey to pheasant to rabbit. There are a million how-to hunting sites, blog posts, and videos out there. And they’re great. But as a new hunter with no family hunting tradition getting started hunting with all the private failures, second-guessing and “what-ifs” can wear a person down. I also want to bring a Colorado-specific perspective since this is where I will be hunting instead of general “Western hunting” articles encompassing several states.
Most articles and videos present information from an expert’s perspective, without the raw, inexperienced vantage of a new hunter who is making mistakes and figuring out hunting on day one.
So that is my goal, to share my journey, warts and all, to remind those out there doing this too that there’s room for humility, laughing at oneself and learning from mistakes. I don’t have the answers, but I am hoping to share them as I experience the hunting opportunities the Centennial state has to offer. Hopefully filling my freezer along the way.
